Here, Bullet occupies a unique space in the art song world as a work that addresses gun violence while amplifying the voice of the veteran experience. Poet Brian Turner shares his firsthand poetic descriptions of the Iraq War, mixing brutally honest depictions of trauma and distress with moments of incredible tenderness and unexpected beauty. The song set was commissioned through a global commissioning consortium - the work won First Prize in the 2020 NATS Art Song Composition Competition and has been performed extensively across the globe. Tony-nominated actor/director Will Chase is turning the work into a short film, and the creative team will work with clinicians and social workers at SF Bay Area veteran centers to help veterans battling PTSD and trauma.
