Hinuber Wal Ich (The Over Journey)
Instrumentation: mezzo, viola and piano
Duration: 6 minutes
Author: Novalis (Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg)
Commissioner: LIEDER ALIVE! (San Francisco, CA)
Premiere: Kindra Scharich, mezzo soprano; Paul Yarbrough, viola; Kurt Erickson, piano. San Francisco, CA
Program Notes: This emotionally charged work sets an autobiographical poem by the 19th Century poet Novalis (Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg). The piano and viola create a texture of surging/swirling arpeggios that underscore the passion of the young poet towards his recently deceased fiancee. the
Towards the end of the trio proper, the music comes to a halt as the singer and viola enter into a musical dialogue, symbolically representing a brief reunion of the poet and his beloved beyond the grave, but it ends all too soon.
The work was premiered with violist Paul Yarbrough of the Alexander String Quartet, mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich, and the composer at the piano.
